Older brother, please enlighten me as to why you kicked a stink when I squeed over a bag resembling a ZX Spectrum keyboard. :|
^Incident.

But anyway, have you ever gotten odd looks from people just because you're geeking out over something? It makes me feel really uncomfortable, which is not good for my (already low) self-esteem. I'd have thought that people were starting to become more tolerant of others liking "geeky" or "nerdy" things, especially with shows like The Big Bang Theory gaining popularity. Maybe we still have a long way to go. Or maybe my brother is just an ignorant prat.

I'm a bit on the nerdy/geek side(obsessed with learning about animals and is extremely brainy), and I'm weird, but I doubt that the fact that I'm a nerd/geek has to do with the fact that I'm weird.

I had a similar reaction from my sister when her husband and I started talking about trees and their scientific names and how they're classified. We went on to talk about other 'nerdy' things.
She said something like "This conversation just got nerdy" and changed the subject.

I was like "...but the conversation was just getting interesting..."
I've learned to get used to people not valuing my expanse of knowledge that they've never heard of, but it would be nice to be around more people who cared about 'nerdy' things.

But I just get nods :nod::nod: and glazed eyes and "Uh-huh, that's nice"

Those people are behind the times. Nerd is the new cool. Gadget world. Tech races. Geek sheek. Tech jobs are the fastest growing in the world. Smart phones, e-readers, and fancy laptops are status symbols.
Granted, that doesn't mean there isn't a sliding scale. Cosplayers are low on the societal acceptance totem pole, lower that video gamers and even RPGers. (My husband and I were collaborating on a RPG tabletop campaign at a sports bar and our server informed us he plays DnD.)

But overall, some of the most powerful and affluent people in our world are nerds and geeks. Most of the top record box office movies are comic book based. World of Warcraft got up to 12 million players.

I always used to get called a nerd during my schooling years, simply because I did my homework. And that's totally weeeeeeeeird.

Iunno I thought geek and nerd meant two different things.

I've seen the terms being used interchangeably. :P

With my experience I either get people who 'squee' with me, give me odd looks or just don't give a crap.
There's so many people in this world everyone just reacts differently to things.
I myself never actually do the whole fangirl squeal and I somewhat consciously glare at anyone who makes such high pitch noises in a public place.

Same here. I just prefer to squee silently.
